Background: This off-grid hunting cabin sits miles away from any paved road. The owner loved the natural look of the logs and contacted Bobcat Staining for advice on how to fix the areas that were being damaged by sitting snow, hail, and direct sun. When we drove out to the property, we were concerned that many of the logs had lost their protective coating and were starting to be able to absorb water. There was surprisingly very little log rot, but it was certainly time for a fresh coat of protective sealant.

Process: While media blasting is always going to produce a more uniform prepped surface to apply stain, sometimes it's not in the budget. We were confident that we could still achieve a beautiful and durable finish on the home without a full sandblast the on the entire home. Instead, to save the customer money and ensure our job lasted, we started by sanding down the discolored, flaking, and spongy areas. This method was effective in getting rid of all the decaying areas, bleached spots, and water-damaged surfaces, and it also saved the owner thousands of dollars. After the logs were cleaned, we masked all the windows, fixtures, and metal rooflines then began applying the fresh coat of clear sealant. We sprayed the product onto the logs and immediately worked it into the wood with block brushes. This application method worked very well on this project because it ensured an even and clear top-coat while making sure the stain soaked into all the cracks and pores of the logs. After the entire first coat was dry, we went around again with a second coat to ensure every square inch of the exterior was fully sealed. We camped out for one more night to let our stain set up before pulling masking and cleaning up the next morning.
