Moonlight Basin

(Dark Oil Restoration)

Background: Located near the base of Six Shooter chair lift at Big Sky, these lake cabins overlook all of the Headwaters chutes and north-facing aspects of the mountain. In a normal winter, they get buried in snow and also get blasted with strong winds and direct sun all year. The wood siding hadn't been sealed in far too long leading to a very grey, porous, and bleached finish. We have already finished staining the full exterior of eight cabins, and we know one thing is for sure... The wood is very thirsty for stain.

Process: The wood on these cabins is so incredibly dried out that the only way of applying enough stain fast enough to stay ahead of cure time, is to soak each board with a sprayer. After the product is heavily applied to the wall, we brush it back and forth to work the thick coat deep into the grain. Many of the dry areas require two or three full coats to make them fully sealed. While it is quite slow progress and very physically demanding work, it is incredibly satisfying to pull the masking off at the end of the staining process to reveal a fresh, shiny, new-looking cabin.
