Background: This wood home sits on the south side of town near Sourdough Canyon. Unlike many of our projects, the exterior coating on this home was still in great shape. The owners reached out to us because they didn't love the bland color, and they desired a color scheme that highlighted the outdoor landscape and the home's wooden architecture. Order of operations is a critical success factor with the production of projects like these because of how many different types of stain and wood were present. The cedar siding had water-based solid-body stain, the posts and beams had a few different colors of semi-transparent oil stain, the doors were either varnished or sealed with a transparent sealant.

Prep: The homeowners had just had a significant amount of landscaping done including new retaining walls, freshly planted grass, and new gardens filled with mulch. To get the home ready for staining, it was critical that we did a proper cleaning of the entire exterior to rid it of dust, dirt, and other debris that would negatively impact our desired finish. When it was all clean and dry, we masked off everything to be able to apply the water-based stain to all the siding.

 

Staining: We sprayed and brushed in two full coats of water-based solid stain on the entire body of the home. Then, we pulled that masking, and re-masked to be able to apply the mix of oil-based, semi-transparent stains to the posts, beams, railings, gable brackets, shingle siding peaks, and doors. Once those parts were completely finished, we pulled all the masking, reinstalled all the downpipes and fixtures, then got to brushing in the deck stain. We used a 6 different colors/types of stain on this project which created a beautiful and look and ensured that each piece on the home was properly treated.
